Specialize as a Female Fitness Trainer
By Staff Writer
Being a fitness trainer is usually a job that does not feel like one, especially if you are fond of keeping fit and exercising. You get to exercise and help people at the same time, and you earn from this as a career or business. Fitness trainers are usually employed by gyms, but some trainers also work with clients independent of the gym. Here are some tips you might wish to consider if you are looking into fitness training as a career:
Experience is the first teacher
It is most likely that if you are interested in becoming a fitness trainer, you are currently enrolled in a gym class. The first step to becoming a fitness trainer is to be a good student. Attend gym sessions regularly and go through the drills. Observe your trainers and take mental notes of their techniques. If there are things that you do not like about the instructor, also take note of that so you will be able to avoid doing the same things later on. Also chat with your gym classmates and pick up their opinions and views, as they would usually have some ideas on what kind of instructor they would prefer to have.
Certification
Prepare to get a fitness certification so you can become a professional fitness instructor. Associations such as Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) provide certification to fitness instructors. This involves a written exam and a physical exam, so it is good to practice your drills. It is also important to be certified in giving CPR, because there may be emergency cases in the gym and in many cases, it could be up to the instructor to give first aid.
While preparing for your certification, also prepare a compilation of exercise music that you will use for your sessions. Also practice giving instructions while exercising. It would be better if you can videotape yourself so you can see if you are connecting with the audience, in this case, your students. It is important to speak clearly and loudly, while maintaining an engaging attitude.
Specialize
The world of fitness has a lot of specialization. You can do aerobic exercises, yoga, pilates, kick boxing – there are lots of possibilities. It is best to pick out a specialization, although it is advisable to try everything, and at least join in a session for each area. Having a specialization will help you focus on a certain techniques. If you focus on yoga, then you can use your time and resources in learning yoga. For instance, you can attend advanced yoga classes, join yoga conventions, read books and course materials on yoga.
If you are ready to embark on a career as a fitness instructor, check out the gyms around your area and see if they are in need of an instructor. If they have no opening for a full time trainer, then you can offer to be a substitute in case a trainer is absent. You can also consider offering fitness programs for individuals. You can have one student at a time, but once they are happy with your services, you are sure to get more referrals.
Just like any other profession, if you are loving what you do, your clients will feel it and they, too will enjoy what you teach. Just remember that becoming a fitness trainer is not just about exercising, but it’s about helping people be healthier and feel good about themselves.
