A budgeting spreadsheet can be of great assistance especially in times like these. The economy is always fluctuating, and most of the time, it gets unpredictable. That is why budgeting is seen as a wise act in order to manage your expenses and see how far you can stretch your income. This applies both to the personal household and the business.

Money is important for today’s survival. Without the proper allocation of this resource, you might end up in an unlikely situation, such as unpaid bills, lack of grocery items, and others. When budgeting, the traditional pen and paper can be used, but in the modern computer era, this practice can now be replaced by a spreadsheet. This way, it would be easier to budget what you have with simple adjustments rather than recalculating every time you need to make a change.

Building Procedures

In building a budgeting spreadsheet, basic knowledge in any spreadsheet software is needed. One does not need to be a master though, because formulas will do. First, one has to create columns for the income, expected expenses, and actual expenses. You might want to further categorize the expenses into fixed expenses, which are the things that you need to keep up with and do not change suddenly, and variable expenses, which are as the name implies, inconsistent.

Get the total amount for each column, preferably with the sum formula. In a budgeting spreadsheet, this formula will automatically compute the result even as you are making changes to the different cells within the column. After that, subtract the total income from the total actual expenses. The difference would be your extra money, which you could use for your savings or other expenses. However, a negative result simply means you are spending more than you can afford.

More Than Just Budgeting

The previous section only discussed the basic addition and subtraction, but complicated operations can be performed with a budgeting spreadsheet as long as you have the knowledge in it. Aside from budgeting, it can make comparisons of a business’s expected and actual income. This can allow you to see gray areas and make necessary adjustments in your budget.

You can also come up with a simple cash flow. With a cash flow maintained daily, you are at a better footing to monitor your daily income and expenses. Balancing your accounts can also be done with basic formulas that you can adjust anytime.

Until now, the worth of spreadsheets has only been seen in managing money. Polls, surveys, and other evaluation tools can make use of spreadsheets. As long as you have the data to be input and know the formula to be used, you will have no problem in generating the results. In a business sense, this can be practical in monitoring the performance of employees or in forecasting your business’s profits.

Budgeting spreadsheets are not only for the budget-conscious mother, but hey are also for the analytical businessman who wants to keep his business alive. Although these are very helpful in maintaining your budget, it is still up to you to come up with ways to minimize and control your expenses.
