Fundamentals

Basically, your first lesson would involve introductions to the piano. Introduce the different parts of the piano—the black and white keys, the foot pedal, and its interior. Give tips and tricks on simple piano repair and maintenance. Afterwards, proceed with how to face the instrument or how to position the body in order to facilitate non-injurious playing.

Introduce the keys and how each are represented on the musical scale. Demonstrate how the fingers are positioned on the keyboard and how they would glide from one key to another.

Note Reading

You have to give your student a primer on how to read musical notes. This is an important aspect of piano playing as pianists play simultaneously with reference to musical sheets. Initiate a lesson on the different musical keys and how they are interpreted on the piano.

Hearing

In accordance with note reading, you will need to teach your beginning piano students how to identify tones and pitches by ear. By developing their hearing skills, they would easily pick up notes even without a musical sheet. Also, having a fine-tuned ear facilitates an enjoyable piano playing experience.

Increase Self-Esteem

As you go about with your lessons, you will notice that your student gradually loses interest. This may be attributed to difficulties in piano playing, finger placement, or reading of notes. It is therefore essential that you provide constant encouragement to your student. Motivate him/her to keep a firm stand and to pursue the lessons as nothing is easily learned.

First Piece

A good way of increasing your student’s self-esteem is to introduce a very easy but melodious piece. You can teach the standard classical pieces or even pop songs like Be There to Love Me by Norah Jones, Smoke on Water by Deep Purple, and Wasting Time by Jack Johnson, among others. Once your student has memorized and efficiently played a piece, he/she would have a renewed self-esteem and will want to continue his/her lessons.

Practice

Emphasize the importance of practice in aspiring to be a good piano player. No one can develop a skill without continuous and guided repetition. Practice in piano playing would facilitate familiarization with the keys and the tone of the sound that they produce. Practice also helps students in identifying and correcting the mistakes made when playing.

Have Fun!

The most important lesson that you can impart to your students is to have fun. Piano playing is a good outlet for releasing emotional stresses. It is supposed to be an entertaining activity and should not pressure or stress out a student.
