Hospitals can be a little cold and intimidating to patients, and so the smiling face of a doctor’s receptionist is one of the best things a person can see. The doctor’s receptionist is generally the first person patients talk to regarding their health, and so the receptionist plays a major role in the patient’s healthcare experience. The receptionist also schedules appointments, manages the doctor’s time, and answers any inquiries patients might have should the doctor not be available. Often, the receptionist is called upon to address billing concerns as well, making her part of the patient’s experience all throughout.

Here’s what qualifications a doctor’s receptionist should possess:

Personal Qualities

Since the medical receptionist will be interacting with the patient for a great amount of time, certain personal qualities are needed to ensure that the patient’s stay in the hospitable is a positive one. One such quality is an underlying concern for a person’s health. There’s a huge difference between dealing with someone who truly wants you to feel better, and dealing with a receptionist who’s just doing her job for a steady paycheck. Genuine concern shines through and brings much-needed comfort to a patient.

A doctor’s receptionist should also be an organized individual. There’s a lot of information that comes across a receptionist’s hands, and it’s the receptionist’s job to make sure that the data is processed in an orderly fashion. The receptionist needs to make sure that no two appointments are booked at the same time, that patients’ records are easily accessible, and that billing information is 100 percent correct, among other responsibilities.

Lastly, a doctor’s receptionist should be a people person. Rapport is a very important thing to have between a doctor and his receptionist. Their ability to get along and work together will determine their successful relationship. The doctor’s receptionist should also be able to establish rapport with patients, most especially the ones who come regularly. Again, it’s a matter of making the patient feel as comfortable as possible, and ensured that he will get the absolute best help he can.

Professional Qualifications

There are a number of professional qualifications that a doctor’s receptionist must possess to be an exceptional worker. Education, for instance, is a major factor in the effectiveness of a receptionist. While medical schooling isn’t necessarily required of a receptionist, knowledge in some areas of medicine is a major plus. A receptionist’s familiarity with medical terminology will help streamline operations and make the job a lot easier. A background in medical coding and billing can also bring a huge advantage to the job. Computer skills are a definite must when it comes to doctor’s receptionists.

Since the doctor’s receptionist will be dealing with the patients for a good amount of time, excellent communications skills are important. This will come in handy when a panicked patient comes in and demands medical attention. A receptionist’s communication skills will help calm the patient down and direct him to the proper course of action.

Lastly, knowledge in legal matters can help a doctor’s receptionist a lot. From insurance questions to potential malpractice complaints, the receptionist will be called upon for help and guidance.

I'm the receptionist of a gynaecologist & obstetrician. First of all, I work for the best Doctor in the world. And then if you are a receptionist at a dr practice forget about the money, you must do it because you love people.
