Find Out How!

Everyone knows the old saying – “When the going gets tough, become a healthcare professional speaker”. Well, everyone in the healthcare industry, at least. In an economy where even the most highly-regarded doctors find that money is a little harder than normal to come by, many are finding that speaking at seminars and conventions is more than a decent way to supplement their income. The simple act of giving a speech can end up paying for your kids’ college tuition if you’re good enough at it. In fact, some healthcare professionals have found the practice to be so lucrative, they’ve actually made changed their careers up to be full-time speakers!

Is It Really Worth My Time?

Of course, being a public speaker isn’t as easy at it looks. Aside from having to capture an audience’s attention for at least half an hour, there’s a lot of other work involved. You’ll have to write your speech, prepare some visual aids for your presentation, and you’ll most likely have to travel quite a distance for some of those talks. If you really think about it, being a speaker can be a lot of work. However, the payoff can be completely worth it. While early jobs might not even pay, the more you speak, the higher your fees can become. The highest-paid speakers, for instance, can make as much as $1500 for every speech! Not too shabby for two to three hours of your time.

How Do I Get in on this Action?

For starters, you’ll have to be an actual healthcare professional. Nobody really wants to listen to someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Not only that, but you’ll have to be pretty good at your job as well. Only well-respected members of the healthcare industry get the honor of being speakers. After all, who would you rather listen to – someone fresh out of med school, or a doctor with years of experience and credentials that would put anyone to shame? In this regard, the call to be a speaker is recognition of your hard work and excellent standing.

Now, you might ask, how can you build a career that seems based entirely on invitations to talk? Getting invited to be a speaker isn’t always the case. However, the invitation to speak is a sign that you have something to say, and people are willing to listen. Invitations to speak are a form of getting the word out as well, as some members of your audience may be impressed enough to hire you as a guest speaker.

The best way to get started, however, is to do it for free. If you’re going to try to supplement your income by being a healthcare professional speaker, you’ve got to let people know that you’re worth paying for to listen to. You can achieve this by giving free talks, posting articles on the internet, and even doing free podcasts. As you give all this free advice, you’ll be building your credentials and requests will start being made. With enough patience, you’ll soon be able to charge people for your time and your words as a healthcare professional.

I do a number of presentations monthly to Hospital discharge planners, social workers and other healthcare providers. My post evaluations are always good. Depending on my presentation I use personal examples of my healthcare expierence; 25 years in MICU and SICU.
