Mobile Car Detailing: Business on Wheels for Wheels
By Staff Writer
Detailing a car is the comprehensive cleaning, waxing, and polishing of both its interior and exterior. This is done to restore the car to its former glory, making it eligible for showroom competitions and car exhibitions. Auto detailing is also done to prevent dirt build-up, thus preserving and increasing a car’s value.
History
Auto detailing is an art that is said to have originated from Southern California. Originally, car owners would clean their vehicles inside and out. They would then apply car wax and polish it to produce a high level of splendor worthy for showrooms. Entry into these exhibitions is mostly for personal gratification, but in some, recognition in the form of trophies, certificates, and cash prizes are also provided. Auto detailing for car exhibitions has then spread all throughout the United States.
Types
There are three general types of car detailing: Interior, exterior, and engine detailing. Each type has its own purpose and uses specific materials and equipment.
Interior Car Detailing. involves vacuuming, brushing, and cleansing. Every spot of the car interior is cleaned, including the dashboard, visors, and the instrument panel. Interior cleaning is done to get rid and prevent the further build-up of dirt. It also gives a desirable interior scent, thus enhancing the riding experience.
Exterior Car Detailing. is the main cleaning focus. It involves washing, paint touching-up, claying, waxing, and polishing. All these are done to bring out the car’s brilliance, entitling it to compete with other cars.
Car Engine Detailing. is done to preserve the car’s engine. It utilizes all-purpose cleaners and anti-grease agents. Grime build-up can cause a car’s performance to falter, so engine cleaning is considered equally important.
Significance in Car Showrooms
As stressed earlier, car detailing is done to make a car noteworthy in automobile shows. In these competitions, a car is evaluated according to its cleanliness, brilliance, and how well it is maintained. Individuals who enter car exhibitions or competitions recognize the importance of detailing services. To them, detailing is a serious undertaking due to its impact to their prized cars.
On the other hand, there are individuals who avail of detailing services simply to ensure their car’s longevity. Car cleaning would be more thorough if the task was given to the professionals.
Business Considerations
At present, there exist 50,000 car detailers all throughout the country. Most of these detailers practice mobile businesses, while some operate upfront auto detailing shops. It is estimated that the auto detailing industry brings in $100,000 in sales and services.
If you aspire to be a car detailer, you first need to educate yourself on the long and tedious process of detailing. You will need professional instruction and certification to assure would-be clients that you are capable of servicing their entries. Afterwards, decide on how you would be providing your services. Mobile car detailing is more popular since car owners prefer that their cars be cleaned within their homes or in close proximity to competition areas. You can still open a car detailing shop and offer home services as per request. Opening a store would also entitle you to provide other automobile services like repairs and upgrades.
