If you need to find a group of people who could help you with a project, being part of online contractor forums would be one good way to help you get connected. Here, you can scout for construction firms, or you can at least discuss issues related to building and maintenance work.
Contractors and professionals are now actively using the Internet in marketing their services, and also in helping fellow small business owners by sharing tips and advice online. Also, if you are unfamiliar with the work requirements and other nuances that might come up, it would be a good idea to look for references and reviews, before completely trusting a contracting company.
Here are a few places you can get connected with contractors.
Craigslist
Craigslist is one of the largest classifieds sites online. While it’s not exactly a forum for contractors, per se, it’s one of the online resources you can check first if you are looking for a contractor in your area.
One of the many listings that Craigslist includes are those of companies and professionals who offer various services, ranging from general contracting, to plumbing, electrical works, and the like. While the site can boast about a wide reach and an almost unequaled popularity when it comes to traffic and overall following, the site has also seen its share of fraud. So be advised to check for credentials first before committing or giving money to a potential partner or contractor.
Contractor Talk
Contractor Talk is an online forum for professionals in the contracting industry. The site offers free memberships, which you can use to join discussions with other contractors, and possibly with potential clients. For the more serious businessman, Contractor Talk also includes a premium subscription, which comes with premium items, like feature articles, access to special forums, and the like.
Contractor City
Contractor City is another online forum for professionals and small businesses in the building, remodeling and maintenance industry. The site offers free membership, which you can use to access various discussions, including licensing, marketing and promotions, and tools and equipment. The forum even allows members to advertise and trade services with each other. This can be particularly useful if you specialize in one contracting job, and you need to partner with another company. One highlight of the forum is the discussion board called “Women in Construction,” which discusses the challenges faced by women in the building trade.
While being part of a contractor forum can help you get connected with fellow contractors, or even potential clients or potential contractors, as a rule, it’s good to do background checks on any company or person you plan to actually deal with, to avoid cases of fraud or misrepresentation. Forums are useful in opening discussion and getting good idea, so be sure to use this to your advantage.

Danielle Humbard says:Tue, July 27, 2010 - 12:24:07 pmHardHatCity not only offers forums but it is the only true professional-social network designed for all members of the construction industry! It offers free contractor leads and forums. Users can search for projects, jobs, materials and construction professionals for free on HardHatCity.com. Membership and customized profiles are free for all users. Profiles offer portfolios so contractors, tradesworkers, and suppliers can display and show off their work and products to prospective customers or employers. Additionally, HardHatCity offers Certification and Verification services to it's members. Professionals are searchable by whether or not they are certified and/or verified. A certified status indicates that the individual has cleared a criminal background check and has a proven identity. A verified status indicates that a contractor is operating with the required licensing/certification, insurances, and bond specified by their jurisdiction.
