Wireless Business Technology

Added Sep 29, 2009

Wireless business technology is not limited to business organizations. Its application can now be seen almost anywhere, wherein laptops can readily connect to the Internet anytime and anywhere. This is made possible without the hassle of wires since radio signals from wireless networks are used as a medium for data transportation instead.

Since being wireless is becoming more popular and better everyday, there are more people and organizations that are getting into it. The continuing popularity of wireless business technology is readily seen in the annual revenues from these products, which amount to billions of dollars.

Components of Wireless Business Technology

The typical setup of a wireless network is an access point that is central to the connecting devices. The prices of the equipment needed to setup a wireless LAN have significantly dropped. Although wired systems still cost less than wireless, the latter are becoming easier to install minus the cost of labor.

Understanding the Wireless Standards

If one is going to implement wireless business technology, he must be able to have a good grasp of the pros and cons of different wi-fi networks. Some of these are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Perhaps the most popular standard is 802.11b, and it works well for most business types. It also has wide 300 feet signal radius, but its bandwidth can only allow 11 megabits per second. Faster than this is 802.11a. It can also support more users and minimize signal interferences from external devices. However, the downside is that its range signal is shorter.

The best characteristics in the two standards are combined in 802.11g, wherein there is higher bandwidth and bigger transmission range. It is also compatible with 802.11b, which makes them a good option to choose when deciding to make a switch. Although some tests have shown that 802.11a are performing better, 802.11g are improving each day.

Business Mobility

If your business does not value the benefits of mobility, then you may have little use for wireless business technology. Wireless networks cater to workers who are always on the go. One must be able to assess first how much is mobility needed in the workplace. If the answer is not much, then it would be wiser to stick with wired networks since they are also capable of giving faster speeds and higher bandwidths.

On the other hand, if you feel that there is a need for you to use wireless networks, then you should purchase equipment that would complement the current wired network. Most companies expand their networks through wireless business technology. Therefore, it should be able t o work with the current system and be compatible with future systems. This way, you could achieve flexibility by segregating the mobile employees in the wireless LAN and the office staff in the wired system.

Although wireless business technology has its own advantages, problems can also arise. Be sure that you have measures against issues with interference and security. The information that is valuable to the organization must be secured, so in implementing a wireless or any other network at all, remember to put safety first.
