Technical support facilities or contact centers/call centers give out opportunities for job-seekers to work from the comfort of their own home through home-based technical support jobs. Other electronics and technology companies are also hiring individuals as technical support representatives who are willing to work at home.
Financial Benefits
Home-based or virtual technical support providers enjoy endless benefits despite their lower wages. First, virtual tech supports are able to save money that would otherwise be spent on transportation. They don’t have to own a car and buy gas. Aside from that, food purchases are curtailed since they eat in their own homes. Home-based tech supports also benefit from flexible and easy schedules. They are free from the worries of rush-hours and being late for work. Also, work-from-home tech supports have better work performances and are more efficient in multi-tasking because they are free from the pressures and distractions encountered in an office.
Technical support facilities and electronics companies set a number of requirements in considering potential home-based technical support providers. For starters, aspiring technical support providers should have a formal education in computer science and/or information technology. The least acceptable requirement is having an associate’s degree in computer science or information technology, or having valid work experience in the computer field. To make themselves more marketable, technical support providers could obtain supplemental information technology and/or computer science studies and industry certifications like CompTIA A+ (Computing Technology Industry Association), Network+, MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional), MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate).
Technical Support Staff Skills
Technical support representatives should have effective problem-solving skills—being able to diagnose, identify, and troubleshoot electronics problems on limited information. They should have in-depth knowledge on computer software problems and errors, system bugs and viruses, hardware and networking problems, ISP connectivity issues, and basic PC troubleshooting.
Most technical support facilities provide bilingual or multilingual technical support services to their clients. The most common second language employed in technical support facilities is Spanish and French.
Technical support agents should also have a strong drive to deliver quality client service. Having effective customer negotiating skills is a must to be able to handle irate callers. Sometimes, tech support companies require their agents to possess a friendly and professional tone on a telephone receiver.
Technical support professionals should be flexible in their work schedules and are available to provide support on a shifting schedule (1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts) and on holidays and weekends.
Hardware Requirements
Work-at-home technical support representatives should have a non-VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) landline for receiving calls. The landline should also have no voicemail or call waiting features. A headset is also required. Other technical requirements are: high-speed internet connection, either cable or DSL; and a one gigahertz virus- and spyware-free computer operating on licensed Windows XP Pro, Home, or better. Aside from work station requirements, technical support facilities also tap into the general home working environment. The technical specialist should be able to secure a work space that is apart from the rest of the house and can facilitate a nine-hour operation without any noise (barking dogs, blaring stereos, honking cars, etc.) or distractions.
